There are a few things that make up a good leader. I have worked very hard to learn from the horrible bosses and managers I have had over my career. I try to work harder than anyone I oversee. I take all of the blame for failures. I am the first one into battle if needed as well. How do you see yourself as a leader?

Charisma

Instills faith, respect, and trust. Has a special gift of seeing what others need to consider. Conveys a strong sense of mission.

Individual consideration

Coaches, advises, and teaches people who need it. Actively listens and gives indications of listening. Gives newcomers a lot of help.

Intellectual stimulation

Gets others to use reasoning and evidence, rather than unsupported opinion. Enables others to think about old problems in new ways. Communicates in a way that forces others to rethink ideas that they had never questioned before.

Courage

Willing to stand up for ideas even if they are unpopular. Does not give in to pressure or to others’ opinions in order to avoid confrontation. Will do what’s right for the company and for employees even if it causes personal hardship.

Dependability

Follows through and keeps commitments. Takes responsibility for actions and accepts responsibility for mistakes. Works well independently of the boss.

Flexibility

Functions effectively in changing environments. When a lot of issues hit at once, handles more than one problem at a time. Changes course when the situation warrants it.

Integrity

Does what is morally and ethically right. Does not abuse management privileges. Is a consistent role model.

Judgment

Reaches sound and objective evaluations of alternative courses of action through logic, analysis, and comparison. Puts facts together rationally and realistically. Uses past experience and information to bring perspective to present decisions.

Respect for others

Honors and does not belittle the opinions or work of other people, regardless of their status or position.

There has been a lot of history behind each one of the spreads and illustrations in my book. My mom was always telling me and my brothers all of these crazy reminders. So as I started to construct the book, I wanted to create visuals that everyone could relate to.

Monsters in the closet

It is hard to imagine any kid that hasn’t at one time or another growing up thought there were monsters in his closet. I remember my brother Curtis and I use to put a chair next to the closet door to warn us if they happened to come out.

I was crazy but hey, we were scared. With this spread I looked to illustrate what the world would look like if we never had anyone to tell help us get over that fear.

I originally sketched the monster spread in 2006. I would play with these concepts and refine them into simple, easy to understand visuals. I always thought that fears as a child are universal, no matter your race or status. The details are probably my favorite part of each illustration. It shows a kid so terrified of the monsters in his closet that he barricades himself in his room until his mid-30’s. As it evolved we just kept adding things like take-out, pizza, an iPad.

A very fun process.

The slide presentation will discuss why failing is a skill most entrepreneurs learn to embrace and how to unlearn traditional teaching to adapt to an ever-changing economic environment.
